CITY MUSEUM OF NOVI SAD – Novi Sad

The City Museum of Novi Sad was founded in 1954 and belongs to the category of complex urban museums, whose activities cover the development of the city from its founding to the modern era. It comprises the following departments:

Department of Archaeology with collections from prehistory, antiquity, and the Middle Ages;

Department of History with collections in the fields of economic, socio-political history, and the history of the Petrovaradin Fortress;

Department of Cultural History with collections in the fields of fine and applied arts, education, and publishing;

Department of Ethnology with collections in the fields of crafts, rural architecture, everyday life, and customs;

Regional Gallery, which collects works of contemporary visual art.

The central building of the Museum is located on the upper plateau of the Petrovaradin Fortress, in a building known as Topovnjača or Mamulina Barracks, constructed in 1775 as a single-story military barracks.

On the ground floor, there is a permanent exhibition titled “Petrovaradin Fortress in the Past”, showcasing the continuity of settlement and military fortifications on this site from prehistory to the First World War.

On the upper floor, there is a Study Exhibition of the Department of Cultural History, presenting civic life in Novi Sad from the mid-18th century to the second half of the 20th century. In addition to period furniture and applied art objects, the exhibition features work by renowned artists such as Sava Šumanović, Đorđe Jovanović, Boško Petrović, Milenko Šerban, and others.

Underground Military Galleries

Part of one of the largest attractions of the Petrovaradin Fortress is open to visitors with guided tours organized by the City Museum of Novi Sad. The underground military galleries constitute a four-level communication system, built in stepped masonry with various corridors and rooms of different purposes and sizes, gun ports, and light shafts.

Opening hours: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (closed on Mondays)

Discounted admission: Free entry for members of ICOM and MDS. Free admission is also available for children without parental supervision, as well as children and adults with special needs.

Group visits:

Group visits must be arranged several days in advance.

Accessibility for visitors with disabilities:

All exhibition spaces on the ground floors of the buildings are accessible to wheelchair users via ramps installed at entrances. A Braille guide is available for blind and visually impaired visitors regarding the content of the permanent exhibitions in the central building of the Museum at Petrovaradin Fortress.
