CHARDA “KALOŠ” – Bačka Palanka

CHARDA “KALOŠ” – Bačka Palanka

Carda (tavern) “Kalos” is situated on the bank of an artificial branch of the Danube in Backa Palanka. It was designed for spectacles. On January 13th, 2002 a gigantic fish broth was cooked here in a kettle; over 4,000 kg of fish was simmering in the thick broth seasoned with paprika, onion, tomato, and salt.

Every summer, Carda “Kalos” organizes competitions in cooking fish broth and stew, which gather over 2,000 people. Numerous awards won by its chefs at competitions all over the country confirm that this is one of the most representative places for preparing fish specialties. People in Backa Palanka often say that “town is not a town without Carda Kalos“. There is another saying which says that Kalos is the mother of all cardas, although, it is not the oldest carda, not even in Backa Palanka.

The guests are offered fresh fish exclusively. There is a wide range of dishes; from top-class fried and cooked fish to traditional dishes, such as pike in uniform (Stuka u mundiru) a stew made of catfish and sterlet without bones. This is the only carda in Vojvodina where you can taste smoked carp made in “podvarak” (stewed cabbage).

Carda can attend 80 people in a hall and 120 on a terrace. The performance of a tamburitza band has to be prearranged. There is also a car park for 100 vehicles and moorings for boats.
