“BASIJANA GRAD” ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE – Donji Petrovci

At the Grad site near Donji Petrovci in the Srem region lie the remains of the Roman city of Bassianae. The settlement was founded in the 1st century as an autonomous civitas and lasted until the 6th century. The town was granted the status of a municipium in 124, while its earliest mention as a colonia dates from 214. Smaller archaeological investigations were conducted in 1882 and 1935. During these, sections of the fortification walls with towers were uncovered, as well as three buildings constructed of stone and brick, featuring heating systems, floor mosaics, wall frescoes, and a sewage network. Numerous surface finds originate from this site, including ceramic and glass vessels, jewelry, coins, stone votive monuments, and sculptures. At the Solnok site, in the territory of the village of Dobrinci, parts of the foundation walls of a military camp with towers have been discovered, along with remains of buildings and graves.
