“CRKVINE” ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE – Horgoš

The site is located in the territory of the village of Horgoš, about 300 meters north of the Subotica–Horgoš railway line. Rescue excavations uncovered the foundations of a church with a tower added against the western wall. The church foundations were built using the *trpanac* technique, of broken stone bonded with diluted clay. Across most of the ground plan, only compacted clay mixed with fine gravel has been preserved, corresponding to the wall width (1 meter). During the excavations, within the ruins of the church interior, a grave containing 15th-century silver jewelry was discovered. The conserved church foundations were later dispersed and destroyed. A replica of the foundations was subsequently made, but it cannot be considered an immovable cultural property. As there is a lack of reliable archaeological data, the author of the excavation dated the church to the mid-13th century, based on analogies with researched sacral buildings, mainly in Hungary. To the south and southeast of the church lies a larger necropolis, partially destroyed by the construction route of a highway, while a medieval settlement developed on its periphery. On nearby dry elevations within the marsh, several smaller settlements have been identified, archaeologically dated from the 11th to the 15th century. Around the remains of the church, a medieval necropolis was also investigated in 1995.
