PAVLE BELJANSKI MEMORIAL COLLECTION – Novi Sad

PAVLE BELJANSKI MEMORIAL COLLECTION – Novi Sad

The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection is a museum dedicated to Yugoslav modern art of the first half of the 20th century. The institution is named after its founder and donor, Pavle Beljanski (1892–1965), a diplomat and art collector. It is located at Trg galerija in a building that was the first in Novi Sad—and among the first in then-Yugoslavia—constructed exclusively for museum purposes. This harmonious architectural work by Ivo Kurtović is a cultural monument.

The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection is a legacy that, through a contemporary museological approach, highlights the importance of Pavle Beljanski, his collection of artworks, and their creators. Among the represented artists are members of the first generation of modernists (Nadežda Petrović, Milan Milovanović, Kosta Miličević), key authors from the interwar period (Sava Šumanović, Milan Konjović, Petar Dobrović, Ivan Radović, Jovan Bijelić, Petar Lubarda, Sreten Stojanović, Risto Stijović, etc.), as well as artists from the second half of the 20th century whose works harmonize with the rest of the collection (Zora Petrović, Liza Križanić, Živko Stojsavljević, Milenko Šerban, Ljubica Sokić, Milica Zorić).

The permanent exhibition of the Pavle Beljanski Collection is composed of works from Beljanski’s legacy, preserving the founder’s essential idea that the exhibits should be connected by a unified thread of coloristic harmony and artistic rhythm, rather than by biographical, historical, or other museological principles.

The museum professionally and engagingly encourages audiences to acquire new knowledge, promotes art research, inspires contemporary creativity, and contributes to spreading the idea of philanthropy. Notable are the innovative educational programs and activities that bring modern art closer to people of all ages. Among these are the permanent exhibition “Touch and Feel” for blind and visually impaired visitors and the application “Museum for All”, designed for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, as well as anyone wishing to experience art in an unconventional way.
