The Vrbas municipality is situated in the very centre of Bačka. The first written document about the Vrbas dates back to 1387. However, the archaeological sites contain traces of settlements from the Neolithic times (5.000 – 2.500 B.C.E), bronze age (around 1.800 B.C.E.), and early medieval times.
For a long time, the population was mostly Slavs, i.e. Serbs. The significant changes in the population structure occurred in the 19th century when Ruthenians and Germans migrated to the area and the late 19th century when Hungarians moved here.
Today, the municipality has 42.000 inhabitants, where the biggest town is the Vrbas with 25.000 inhabitants. The municipality encompasses 5 settlements: Bačko Dobro Polje, Zmajevo, Ravno Selo, Savino Selo, and Kucura. The Vrbas has an exceptional geographical position, and it is at the crossroads of the road, railway, and water routes. The most important ones are the E-75 highway and Belgrade-Budapest-Vienna railway which connect Serbia with Europe and provide the Vrbas with an opportunity to develop transit tourism.
The waterways consist of the Danube-Tisa-Danube canal in the total length of 39 km and the Jegrička river. The Jegrička is a very important aquatic ecosystem with part of it running through the municipality and is protected as the first-grade natural wealth.
