MEMORIAL COLLECTION OF JOVAN JOVANOVIĆ ZMAJ – Sremska Kamenica

MEMORIAL COLLECTION OF JOVAN JOVANOVIĆ ZMAJ – Sremska Kamenica

The museum dedicated to one of the greatest Serbian Romantic poets, Jovan Jovanović Zmaj (1833–1904), is closely linked to the founding and work of the society “Zmaj”, established in 1904.

The house in Sremska Kamenica, where the poet spent his final years, was adapted and opened to the public in 1933. At the same time, the monument “Children of Uncle Jova”, created by sculptor Stevan Stojanović, was unveiled. Care of the museum was entrusted to Leposava Jovanović, the poet’s last descendant. After wartime destruction, the Zmaj Museum was reopened in 1957 in its restored form, when the children’s poetry festival “Zmaj’s Children’s Games” was also initiated. Since 1958, the museum has been part of the Museum of the City of Novi Sad.

The permanent exhibition is organized into smaller sections highlighting the poet’s family life, literary and public work, contributions to children’s literature, posthumous publications, and critical works by writers and scholars about Zmaj. A separate building houses postwar editions of Zmaj’s works in the languages of SFRY people, translations into Polish and Russian, as well as books and journals on his literary contributions and materials from the ongoing Zmaj’s Children’s Games festival.

In the park of the memorial museum, a 1973 bust by Ivan Meštrović, “Zmaj and Child”, is displayed.

Note: Group visits should be arranged several days in advance.
