“KALAKAČA” ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE – Beška

The Kalakača archaeological site represents a hillfort-type settlement dating from the Early Iron Age. It is located on a river terrace high above the Danube, near the Beščanski Bridge. The first investigations of this site, conducted prior to the construction of the highway and bridge, revealed a portion of the settlement that was protected on the southern side by a ditch and likely an earthen rampart, while the other sides were naturally defended by ravines (surduci) and a high steep riverbank. Within the excavated area, 215 structures were discovered, the majority of which are silos for storing grain and other goods. A smaller number of structures are circular huts with a central supporting post. The site is highly renowned and recognized, not only in Serbian but also in European archaeology. The largest number of movable finds uncovered during excavations consists of fragments of ceramic vessels—including amphorae, pithoi, bowls, cups, and miniature casting vessels.
