AGRICULTURAL MUSEUM – Kulpin

AGRICULTURAL MUSEUM – Kulpin

The Agricultural Museum in Kulpin, the only specialized museum institution in the country dedicated to researching and studying the agrarian past, was founded in 1993. The museum complex consists of the “Great Castle” or “Kaštel” and the “Small Castle” or “Old Castle,” both protected as cultural heritage monuments. In addition to the two castles, the complex includes an administrative building, a blacksmith’s workshop, a stable, a machine workshop, and a grain warehouse.

The museum is surrounded by a magnificent 4.5-hectare park, which is a natural monument and an arboretum of rare and protected plant species. Historically, the park was also considered a first-class work of horticultural and garden art. The museum hosts permanent thematic exhibitions as well as temporary displays.

The construction date of the castle within the Đoka Dunđerski estate is unknown. Historical records indicate that it was originally built for the noble Stratimirović family. In 1745, Maria Theresa gifted the estate to the family in recognition of their service in the war against the Turks on Austria’s side. The Stratimirović family owned the estate in Kulpin for approximately 120 years. At the end of the 19th century, in 1889, the property was transferred to the Dunđerski family, who owned it until 1945, when the estate was nationalized.

Both buildings stylistically belong to the Classicism era. The Great Castle (“Kaštel”) received its current appearance during a restoration in 1912, while the Small Castle (“Old Castle”) is a single-story building of the same style.
