“GRADINA” ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE – Rakovac

On the northern slopes of Fruška Gora, east of the Dumbovački stream, in the Stučica area, lies the site of Gradina. Between 1963 and 1978, systematic archaeological excavations were conducted at Gradina, focused on uncovering the remains of a medieval church. Two phases of the church were distinguished: Romanesque and Gothic. The Romanesque phase consisted of a three-nave church with three semicircular apses, beneath which a crypt was located. The Gothic church, partially built on the foundations of the Romanesque structure, had a triangular apse with buttresses. The site of Gradina was also home to the Dombo Monastery, which in the 15th century was fortified with a wall and rampart. Despite this, the Ottomans captured and burned the monastic complex in the first half of the 16th century. By the provisions of the Treaty of Karlowitz, the monastery was completely demolished in 1702. Some of the uncovered remains have been preserved. Before the medieval period, Gradina was the site of Roman construction, from which remains of a building’s hypocaust system and movable artifacts have been found. In the oldest layers, traces of an earthen fortification from the Early Iron Age were also observed.
