FIELD LEGET – Šašinci

FIELD LEGET – Šašinci

East of Sremska Mitrovica, about 4 km from the village Šašinci the field Leggett is located. On 6 September, 1914 some parts of the Timok Division I conducted crossing and forcing the Sava river in order to engage more powerful Austro-Hungarian forces. Although the Serbian army was defeated in this battle it had great significance for the operation of the Serbian army and its allies binding stronger enemy forces and helping the Serbian Army to cross the river successfully. The pressure on allies was reduced, both in the west and the east. The location of the battle is marked first by the Austrians with single wooden cross on a stone pedestal. On the cross there was a text in German and Serbian language, written in the memory of soldiers of both armies who died there. In the same place Sokolsko association from Sremska Mitrovica erected in 1923 a monument 8 m high, made of brick and concrete in a pyramidal shape set on a pedestal and it is plastered and painted white. On the south side of the monument there are two bronze reliefs and on the northern there is a crest in the form of a two-headed eagle with spread wings. The text in memory of the killed soldiers is engraved on three sides of the monument. In front of the monument there are five mass graves of killed Serbian soldiers, fenced with metal fence. Former field Leggett no longer exists since the area has been forested with poplar for industrial purposes. Partial reconstruction of the monument was made in 2003 and 2004.
