“VLADIMIR FIJAT” GALLERY – Samoš

“VLADIMIR FIJAT” GALLERY – Samoš

Vladimir M. Fijat was born in Samoš on November 30, 1883, as the third child of Marko and Olimpijada Fijat. He completed primary school in his hometown, after which he moved to Belgrade to continue his education. He worked as a traveling salesman and was also engaged in collecting works of art.

At the outbreak of World War I in 1914, he enlisted in the ranks of the Serbian National Army of the Kingdom of Serbia. He took part in the Salonika Front (1916–1918), from which he brought back valuable photographic documentation and watercolors. After the war, he served at the court of King Alexander Karađorđević. He donated his art collection to Samoš in 1959. He passed away on March 16, 1959, in a psychiatric hospital in Vršac.

The Vladimir Fijat Gallery was established to prevent the further dispersal and deterioration of the collector Vladimir Fijat’s legacy. With its collection of paintings and copies from different time periods and artistic movements, it is highly interesting to visitors who, in addition to naïve art, are eager to explore other forms of painting. The gallery is in excellent condition; however, its main drawbacks are insufficient marketing promotion and its location outside major travel routes.
