“KUVA” (CASTELLUM ONAGRINUM) ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE – Begeč

The remains of an ancient fortification with a harbor are located on the left bank of the Danube, in the settlement of Begeč, in the areas known as Kuva and Acke. It was built at the end of the 3rd century as part of the fortified counter-limes, opposite the fort of Bononia (Banoštor). Minor archaeological excavations were carried out in 1902, while investigations in 1967 and 1974–75 uncovered parts of the southern rampart, a tower, and the foundation remains of sections of the harbor along the Danube bank. On the southern side of the complex, there is a late medieval necropolis as well as graves from the Migration Period, while a Sarmatian necropolis is located along the presumed northern rampart. The riverside section of the fortification was covered in 1965 by a flood-control embankment built for flood protection. On the remaining surface, traces of ramparts and other structures within the fortification can still be identified based on the terrain configuration.
