CITY MUSEUM – Bečej

CITY MUSEUM – Bečej

The museum was founded in 1953, and the following year the Bečej Art Colony was established. As a result of its activities, a gallery was founded within the museum in 1956, and from that year the official name of the institution became City Museum and Gallery Bečej. The current name was adopted in 1990.

The City Museum Bečej is a local, complex-type museum institution with jurisdiction only over the municipality of Bečej. It houses ethnological, fine arts, applied arts, numismatic, and natural history collections, with a total of approximately 10,000 objects.

The fine arts collection, which includes works by Uroš Predić and a large number of 19th-century portraits and icons, has been enriched with works by artists who participated in the art colony, such as Milan Konjović, Milan Kerac, Pavle Blesić, Ankica Oprežnik, Jožef Ač, and many others.

The museum’s permanent exhibition, opened in 1973, was closed to the public for twenty years, except for the display at the “Carbide” semi-factory, which presents the medieval settlement of Terlek.
