CITY LIBRARY – Novi Sad

The City Library in Novi Sad is located in a building that is the endowment of Anka and Arsa Pajević, publishers, patrons, and benefactors of the Serbian people.

It continues the tradition of the Serbian Reading Room of Novi Sad, which was founded on September 23, 1845. Its first president was Jovan Rajić Jr., a lawyer from Novi Sad. The Reading Room received its first constitution, regulating its organization and work, in December 1860. In 1861, Dr. Svetozar Miletić became its head, while Jovan Jovanović (later known as Jovan Jovanović Zmaj) served as secretary.

The Serbian Reading Room founded the Serbian National Theatre in 1861, the first professional theatre among Serbs. It also supported the work of the United Serbian Youth, the Serbian Singing Society, and many other institutions and organizations.

The Serbian Reading Room maintained its independent identity until 1958, when it merged with the “Đura Daničić” Library, district libraries of the city, and later the lending department of the Matica Srpska Library. From this integration, it took on the form and mode of operation that it maintains today as the City Library of Novi Sad.

The City Library in Novi Sad, with more than 23,000 users and a collection of around 450,000 books, is one of the largest public libraries in the country. With 66 professional staff members out of 87 employees, it is equipped to meet all professional challenges.

As the central library for the South Bačka District, it plans and monitors the development of library services across a network of 250 libraries and library units.
