MATICA SRPSKA – Novi Sad

“Matica srpska” is the oldest Serbian cultural and scientific institution. This literary, scientific and cultural society had been founded in Budapest in 1826 and it was moved to Novi Sad in 1864, and since than it has been working in this town. The aim of “Matica srpska” was enlightening and fostering of the Serbian literature. Therefore, it started a magazine called “Chronicle of Matica srpska”. Because of its uninterrupted publishing, this is considered to be the oldest magazine for literature in the world. “Matica srpska” have initiated and realized many significant projects. We would like to single out an edition “Books for people” (1885 – 1932); “Novi Sad Agreement” (1954); “Orthography of the Serbo-Croatian Literary Language” (1960); and “Vocabulary of the Serbo-Croatian Literary Language” in six volumes (1967 – 1976). The Museum of Vojvodina and Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments in Vojvodina emerged from “Matica srpska”. The “Library of Matica srpska”, the institution of a national importance, “Gallery” and “Publishing House” have still been under the wing of “Matica srpska”. Because of its utmost importance for the Serbian culture, the Serbian parliament passed the Law of “Matica srpska” in 1992. “Matica srpska” changed its seat in Novi Sad several times. Since 1928, it has been working in the edifice built by Marija Trandafil, the greatest Serbian benefactor. This building was erected in 1912 according to the project of an architect Momcilo Tapavica for the purposes of Novi Sad orphanage. It is situated on the corner of Matica Srpska Street and Svetozar Markovic Street.

THE MATICA SRPSKA LIBRARY


The Matica Srpska Library in its funds has more than 3,500,000 books and other publications. The Library receives the sample copy of all the publications of Serbia. The Library has 671 old manuscript books, the greatest collection of Serbian books from the 15th to the 19th century and the richest collection of Serbian periodicals from the 18th and the first half of the 19th century. The legacies and the donated libraries both of individuals and institutions are preserved as the special collections. The Library exchanges publications with 320 foreign libraries and institutions. Cataloguing and bibliography work are automated since 1989. CIP cataloging is made for all Vojvodina publications. In August 20011, the Library data base has had over 1.170.000 entries. The Library gives services in research domestic as well as foreign data bases. In its 7 reading-rooms there are 250 seats. The Library is constantly expanding its publishing and exhibit work. Restoration and conservation is done in a modern well equipped laboratory. As the central library for all University and public libraries in Vojvodina organizes expert exams for all Vojvodina libraries.
