Početna / Experiences / MONUMENT TO THE VICTIMS OF THE RAID – Novi Sad
In Novi Sad, on the quay now named Quay of the Victims of the Raid, the fascist occupiers carried out a mass shooting of more than a thousand innocent citizens of Novi Sad during the January raid, from January 21 to 23, 1942. On this site stands the bronze composition “Family”, 4 meters high, dedicated to the victims who fell in the war from 1941 to 1945.
The monument is the work of sculptor Jovan Soldatović and was unveiled in 1971. At the beginning of 1992, the monument was supplemented with 78 additional bronze plaques, also made by the same sculptor. Four plaques (three in Serbian and one in Hebrew) provide key information about the event, while 66 plaques list the names of the victims. Between the text plaques, decorative plaques are rhythmically arranged, featuring symbols such as the Star of David (4 plaques), the cross (2), and the ocilo (1).
Beneath the monument are plaques with inscriptions in Serbian, Hungarian, Slovak, and Hebrew. The reconstruction of plaques that had been forcibly removed was carried out in 2004.
