Početna / Experiences / HISTORICAL ARCHIVE OF SREM – Sremska Mitrovica
The Historical Archive “Srem” was established in 1946, with its headquarters in Sremska Mitrovica. It is a regional institution covering seven municipalities in Srem: Stara Pazova, Inđija, Irig, Šid, Ruma, Pećinci, and Sremska Mitrovica.
The Archive’s activities include supervision of registries, collection, preservation, processing, and use of archival materials for public, private, and scientific purposes.
The archive houses around 1,300 different collections documenting life in the region, including the economy, judiciary, education, administration, socio-political and religious organizations. The most significant archival materials are church registry books from 1732–1900 (Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Greek Catholic, and Jewish). Researchers from Germany, Italy, Austria, France, Russia, and even the USA, Canada, and Brazil have requested access to these records.
Additionally, there are administrative collections from the second half of the 18th century up to 1900, including magistrates, marketplaces, estates, districts, counties, municipalities, etc. These collections are still not fully explored.
Older collections are used to research population migrations from Northern and Eastern Europe into this region, and from here to Western Europe and the USA. This area historically served as a bridge between Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and Asia. From the 15th to the 19th century, it was part of the Military Frontier between the Habsburg Empire and the Ottoman Empire.
The Archive is housed in a building constructed around 1700, which in the late 18th century served as the headquarters of the 9th Frontier Regiment of the Petrovaradin Regiment.
During the First and Second World Wars, both Allied and enemy forces passed through Srem, leaving behind archival materials of great significance for the study of European history.
