The Institution for the Nurturing of Culture “Srem” is a social organization in the fields of culture, education, science, art, and creative work, founded in December 2003. The Institution publishes informational materials and promotional content to inform the general public about its activities and to promote cultural and educational work, as well as all forms of amateur and professional creativity.
Based on the calendar of the Union of Amateurs of Serbia and Vojvodina, it establishes the schedule of municipal festivals (recitation, drama, and music) and organizes them. It also monitors and supports the work of Cultural and Artistic Societies of national minorities (Rusyns, Roma, etc.).
In its publishing activities, the most significant is the journal for science, art, and culture Sundial (Sunčani sat). Established in 1992 and published once a year (average print run: 1,000 copies), the journal focuses on preserving the cultural and historical heritage of Sremska Mitrovica and the entire Srem region.
Within the “I Love SM” (Ja volim SM) project organized by the Cultural and Educational Community, the Festival of Oratory Sirmium Lux Verbi – Sirmium, the Light of the Word was held for ten consecutive years. The Institution for the Nurturing of Culture “Srem” took over the organization of this Festival in 2004.
The Festival is held among the ancient monuments of one of the oldest cities in Europe, at the site of ancient Sirmium. At the beginning of the Common Era, the city was home to a class of intellectuals who left enduring legacies. Among these is a rare bronze sculpture of an orator, a rhetorician from the early Common Era, created to celebrate the power of truthful speech. In ancient times, the city also hosted famous writers and biographers who praised Sirmium as the “populous and glorious mother of cities.”
The Festival has gained widespread recognition and represents the most important cultural event in Sremska Mitrovica. It is international in scope, and to date participants have come from Greece, Russia, Bulgaria, Republika Srpska, and Italy.
