The Military Frontier building of the Petrovaradin Regiment, 9th Grenadier Regiment, was constructed after 1747, when Mitrovica became the seat of the Regiment. (Today it houses the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments.)
Institutional protection of cultural monuments in the Srem region and part of Mačva has been carried out for over four decades, beginning with the establishment of the Sremska Mitrovica Regional Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments in December 1961.
Historical circumstances have contributed to the presence of material evidence of the greatest significance for the cultural history of the Serbian people, other ethnic groups, and national minorities who have lived in the region. After the end of World War II, the Fruška Gora monasteries were severely damaged, as were several dozen Orthodox churches, leaving the cultural heritage exposed to constant and accelerated deterioration.
The past few decades have marked a new era in the protection of cultural heritage. A large number of cultural assets have been saved, preserved, and are now serving the continuation of cultural legacy.
Cultural monuments are the vision of an era and the spirituality of a people, the voice of creative destiny, national individuality, and creative energy imprinted with the essence of history. Each monument possesses its own historicity, which forms its identity and integrity.
Within the territory of Srem under the Institute’s jurisdiction, there are a total of 215 immovable cultural assets. Among these, 29 have been designated as being of exceptional importance: 23 cultural monuments, 1 spatial cultural-historical unit, 3 archaeological sites, and 2 significant locations.
