MUSEUM OF CHURCH ART – Sremska Mitrovica
Početna / Experiences / MUSEUM OF CHURCH ART – Sremska Mitrovica
The unique Museum of Church Art is housed in the Church of Saint Stephen, built at the beginning of the 17th century near the Sava River, known as the “Old Mitrovica Church.” This smaller single-nave church is one of the rare, preserved examples of sacred architecture from the period of Ottoman rule, constructed from durable materials.
The church-museum has been open to the public since 1946, with the approval of church authorities, following the collection of exhibits from the ruins of burned Srem churches and monasteries.
The iconostasis in the church (1775) is the work of Teodor Kračun (? – 1781), the leading Baroque painter among Serbs in the second half of the 18th century. He is also the author of the iconostases in the Hopovo Monastery (1770), the Church of Saint George in Sombor (1772), and the Cathedral Church in Sremski Karlovci (1781). The icons on this iconostasis are considered some of the finest works of Serbian Baroque painting in Vojvodina, while an unknown woodcarver demonstrates characteristics of the Ohrid carving tradition.
The church also houses icons by painters Petar Čortanović, Pavel Đurković, Jovan Isailović, Lazar Stajić, Stevan Aleksić (from Bešenovo Monastery), as well as a number of icons by unknown authors. In addition to the icons, the church preserves old manuscript and printed books, ripidions, antimensia, candlesticks, and other items of applied church art.
