THE CHURCH OF ST. PETER AND PAUL – Berkasovo

It was built between 1766. to 1778. It was built in baroque style. It was made like a one nave building with the U – turn altar apse on the east. The high belfry, with the iron cap, was built later by the west façade. Peaceful decoration consists of pilastars and decorative roof wreath. The representative multi – floor iconostasis, richly decorated by baroque motifs, are work of the unknown artist.

For a long time it was considered that the author of the wall decorations from 1787. was Kuzman Kolarić, painter from the late baroque style. Recent researches show that it was maybe Andrej Šaltist from Novi Sad, whose signature was found on the iconostasis of the monastery Privina Glava, was also considered to be done by Kolarić. During the time the paintings of the Berkasovo church suffered the big changes.

For the work on paintings was hired Pavle Čortanović in 1862. The Mother`s of God throne and the Metropolitan throne were decorated by icons of Svetozar Popović in 1910. The conservative works were done in 1982.
