PRIVINA GLAVA MONASTERY – Privina Glava

PRIVINA GLAVA MONASTERY – Privina Glava

PRIVINA (PRIBINA) GLAVA MONASTERY, with its church dedicated to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, was, according to tradition, founded in the 12th century by the nobleman Priba (Priva). According to another, more widely accepted tradition, it was founded by the Srem Despots of the Branković family at the end of the 15th century. The first reliable records date from 1566–1567.

On the site of the old church, the present church was built between 1741 and 1760, modeled after the church of Novo Hopovo. The monastery residential buildings (konaks) were constructed between 1753 and 1771 and took their present form in the second half of the 19th century. The icons on the iconostasis, the altar icons, and the wall paintings in the central part of the church were created by Kuzman Kolarić between 1786 and 1791.
