CULTURAL & EDUCATIONAL CENTER “ŠID” – Šid

The Cultural and Educational Institution in the Municipality of Šid was known until 1990 as the “Nikola Vlaški” People’s University. From that year onward, not only did the institution change its name, but the Cultural and Educational Center (CEC) also expanded its activities. Today, it forms a mosaic of diverse cultural events and supports the promotion and education of all those who wish to contribute to the culture of the town and the entire Šid municipality.

Today, CEC Šid engages in artistic and literary creation, performing and theater arts, publishing books, brochures, music books, and other publications, issuing magazines and similar periodicals, film screenings, adult education, and retail trade of books, newspapers, and stationery.

As part of its annually organized events, CEC Šid traditionally invites renowned figures from Serbia’s cultural heritage and beyond, providing opportunities for children, youth, and the general public to showcase their talents, leave a personal mark, and contribute to cultural life. In collaboration with the Cultural Institute of Vojvodina, CEC Šid annually organizes the following events: the Art Colony (on the paths of Sava Šumanović), “Jastrebić Literary Encounters,” “Višnjić Days,” the “Saint Sava Academy,” “Saint Nicholas Celebration,” December 6th (the day of Šid’s liberation), and municipal recitation and children’s theater festivals.

All these events aim to honor the works of notable figures from Šid and its surroundings and to preserve the memory of important dates in Serbian history. In addition, CEC Šid organizes numerous celebrations, poetry evenings, book promotions, and competitions.

Within the CEC, there is also the “Filip Višnjić” Literary Club, the amateur theater “Branislav Nušić,” and a recitation section. The building also houses the “Dositej” bookstore, where books and publications from all Serbian publishing houses can be purchased or ordered.

Every town, large or small like Šid, contributes its share to the general cultural treasury of Vojvodina and Serbia. Within its means, CEC Šid fulfills this role. The value and significance of that contribution do not always depend on the size of the town or its population but on the quality of what the town or individuals do to ensure that spiritual and material wealth is not lost to oblivion.
