SAVA ŠUMANOVIĆ MEMORIAL HOUSE – Šid
Početna / Experiences / SAVA ŠUMANOVIĆ MEMORIAL HOUSE – Šid
The Memorial House of Sava Šumanović is part of the Sava Šumanović Gallery in Šid. The house was originally built in 1867 by Paja Nikolić for a brewery. At the end of the 19th century, it was given for residential use to the family by Dr. Dragutin Grčić, husband of the sister of Sava’s father, Milutin. Sava Šumanović spent both his early childhood and the last decade of his life in this house, until he was taken to his execution site on August 28, 1942.
After Šumanović returned from Paris in 1930, the house was adapted to meet the artist’s needs. All furniture and objects displayed belonged to the family. During post-World War II nationalization, Persida Šumanović managed to retain the house and fully preserve her son’s studio, where over 600 paintings were created. Persida even hosted Josip Broz Tito in the house in 1965 and passed away there in 1968.
The house preserves an authentic environment in which many of Šumanović’s masterpieces were created. The Municipality of Šid purchased the house from the heirs, and since 1982 it has displayed original furniture, an easel, painting tools, and other personal items. The Memorial House has been declared a cultural monument of great importance.
