The founding date of the First Serbian Reading Room in Šid is considered to be December 17, 1849. This is supported by a document held by the Library, the famous *Bukvice* by Dositej Obradović, printed in Old Church Slavonic and published in Vienna in 1830.
Since then, the Library has frequently changed its location and name, until February 26, 2002, when it was named after one of the most important writers of this region, Simeon Piščević, the author of the famous ”Memoirs”, which, from a historical and literary perspective, represent one of the most significant written records of the second half of the 18th century.
