‘‘SAVA ŠUMANOVIĆ‘‘ GALLERY – Šid

The “Sava Šumanović” Gallery is a specialized museum institution founded on September 21, 1952, and is housed in the birthplace of Sava Šumanović (1896–1942). The collection was donated by Persida Šumanović, the artist’s mother, who bequeathed to the municipality of Šid the works of her tragically deceased son, which hold great material and artistic value, as well as the family house where the gallery is now located. Following the Serbian tradition of benefactors, legators, and donors, Persida ensured that art lovers and experts in her hometown could become acquainted with the work of one of Serbia’s most significant artists. A gifted painter and noble man, Sava shared the fate of the Serbian people and homeland, yet his works testify that light continues life eternally.

The gallery is housed in a typical single-story town house with a carriage passage, built in the second half of the 19th century. The gallery’s art collection comprises 417 works, including 350 oil paintings on canvas and 67 tempera, watercolors, and drawings. Most of the paintings belong to Šumanović’s final creative period, developed in Šid from 1931 to 1942. A smaller portion of the collection includes works he brought from Paris in 1930 when he permanently returned to Šid.

The gallery organizes exhibitions of works from its collection that thematically trace the developmental path of one of the most renowned Serbian painters of the first half of the 20th century. Šumanović’s painting represents the pinnacle of modern Serbian visual art of the early 20th century, while his tragic death symbolizes the cursed fate of the modern artist and human being caught in the whirlwind of war.
