CHURCH OF ST. NICHOLAS – Šid

The monumental church of St. Nicholas was built in the second half of XVIII century. With the height of the dome it exceeds the Srem’s churches of that time. It belongs to contemporary baroque style of sacral building by the conception of space and shapes of architect ornaments. It is one nave building with half- circled vault and high near wall bell tower. Unusual are only segmental curved lines of window vaults and side walls of the dome. The accented heights of the church are strengthened by separated long pilasters of simple profiled capitals. Under the roof there was made the simple profiled wreath. Flooring of the bell tower is emphasized by horizontal wreaths.

The main entrance is on the west, while on the south there is the side portal. The high iconostasis from the second half of the XVIII century is carved in baroque style. The grapevine with grapes, oak leafs and rose buds are all around the icons and pillars on iconostasis. The Mitropolit throne and the choir, tables and parts of church furniture are curved like the iconostasis, which gives the impression of unique and authentic baroque interior of the church. The iconostasis is painted by Grigorije Nikolić Zemun painter in 1787. The Sombor painter Jovan Nedeljković was called to restore the iconostasis in 1825.

The static restoration was done in 2006.
