NATIONAL MUSEUM “PANČEVO” – Pančevo
Početna / Experiences / NATIONAL MUSEUM “PANČEVO” – Pančevo
The National Museum Pančevo was founded on December 23, 1923, at a meeting attended by prominent figures of Pančevo at the time, including Mayor Vladimir Margan and Dr. Borislav Jankulov. The meeting was held at the initiative of Dr. Borislav Jankulov, who was unanimously elected Director and the first curator of the Museum of the City of Pančevo.
The museum originated from private collections, as did many other museums around the world, and it ranks among the older institutions of this kind in the country. It is housed in the building of the former Magistrate, constructed in 1833 in the Neoclassical style. With its location and architecture, it dominates the main city square and contributes to the city’s Central European identity.
The National Museum Pančevo is a regional museum of a complex type, with departments of ethnology, history, art history, and archaeology, as well as a documentation center, a library, and photo and conservation studios. Its activities cover the entire South Banat District.
The collections of the National Museum Pančevo exceed local significance, as reflected in the objects displayed in its permanent exhibition. Among the most important are artifacts of the Starčevo culture, the “Bound Tree” (a symbol of the city’s craft development), and the restored Flag of the Serbian Voivodeship from 1848/49. Among numerous paintings, one of the most renowned works of Serbian art stands out: “Migration of the Serbs” by Paja Jovanović. The Pančevo version of this painting is the oldest and most authentic in its depiction of settlers and served as the basis for later versions.
In addition to the permanent exhibition space, the National Museum Pančevo has three gallery spaces for temporary exhibitions and a Ceremonial Hall. The Ceremonial Hall is designed as the most representative room of the Magistrate, featuring rich painted decoration. It hosted the most important events in the city’s history, as well as regular sessions of the City Senate. Today, it regularly hosts exhibitions, lectures, literary evenings, and concerts. The museum objects are the property of the National Museum Pančevo.
