THE WINERY PROBUS – Sremski Karlovci

Sremski Karlovci is famous for vineyards and good wines for a long time. The generations in our family grew grapes and produce wine. The centuries of grape growing, in Srem, made our family name the wine cellar “PROBUS” by the name of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus, which is from Srem, and according to historical facts his legions planted the first grapes on Fruška Gora in III century AD. The family tradition of grape growing and wine production, according to records and ancestors, goes back to the end of XVIII and beginning of XIX century. Since then a lot of time has passed. People and habits have also changed, but love for the vineyard was in the hearts of our ancestors, it is in ours and it will be in the hearts of future generations. The sorts of grapes have also changed, the ways we treat vineyards, the mechanization did its work, as well as the technology in wine production has stepped ahead and modernized. But the thing that has not changed, is the effort and a huge work which our family invest in vineyard and wine cellar to offer the wine lovers the wines of great quality. Grandpa Đura is one of the oldest vineyard owners and winemakers in Sremski Karlovci, so some call him the “legend”. The vineyard and wine cellar are everything for him. He cannot move very quickly, but he uses the stick to walk and work in the vineyard, but he does not give up. The wines are produced under his control from the grapes sorts riesling, župljanka, vranac, famous “grandpa Đura`s” frankovka, old sorts of plemenka and slankamenka and others. The wine cellar “PROBUS” produces some sorts of brandies (komovica, loza, pear, cherry, apricot). The peak of traditional wine production represents the most famous bermet whose receipt is top secret and is told from knee to knee. Our products are awarded many gold, silver and bronze medals and diplomas on international fair and other manifestations, but the most important award is this given by the glass and song in the wine cellar. Bermet “PROBUS” was crowned in 2006, by the award and crown for the quality on an international fair in Vroclav in Poland.
