HOMELAND HOUSE – Sremski Karlovci

If you are curious tourists, researcher, artist, writer, lover of traditional culture you may visit the facilities of the Foundation of the TRADITIONAL HOUSE at 1A Andrej Volnog Street in Sremski Karlovci. The house is about 250 years old (thatched cottage made of charge) and dates from the second half of the eighteenth century. The house is furnished with the contemporary furniture. At the site of the Foundation can experience the life of people of that time, to see how they lived, what they were doing, how they are clad, fed, what sort of beds they slept in, how they heat premises in winter and how they cool premises in summer , see … .

Sremski Karlovci lies on the right bank of the Danube and the slopes of Fruška Gora. Along Sremski Karlovci there is a railway track Vienna – Istanbul as well as the main road communications of Central Europe and the Middle East. Sremski Karlovci is approximately 70 km far from Belgrade, and only 10 km from Novi Sad.

The place has numerous cultural – historical monuments. In addition to the “Chapel of Peace”, which was erected to commemorate the signing of Karlovac Peace Agreement of 1699, there is also the oldest grammar school of Serbian people (Grammar School was founded in 1791, and the present building was built in 1891) and oldest seminary of Serbian Orthodox Church ( founded in 1794). Patriarch’s Palace had been the seat of the Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church until 1930, the City Hall is from 1790, as well as the renowned famous fountain Four Lions, located in the center of town.

When you come to Karlovci do not miss to visit the Museum of Serbian Orthodox Church, as well as four local churches: the Cathedral, until the displacement of the seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Belgrade in 1930, “the main church” in which the Patriarch served the Lower church and the Upper church as well as the Roman Catholic Church “Holy Trinity”, the oldest church in the village.
