CHURCH OF ST. PETER AND ST. PAUL – Sremski Karlovci

The Lower Church is dedicated to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. It is first mentioned in a record dating from 1599, while the church was rebuilt on its old foundations in 1719. On 13 October 1784, Petar Petrović Njegoš, the future Saint Peter of Cetinje, was consecrated as a bishop before the altar of the Lower Church.

The iconostasis of the Lower Church was made in 1829 and is the work of the icon painter Dimitrije Bratolić. A plane tree was planted in the churchyard not long after the church was built. Today, it is under state protection and is a magnificent natural monument of Sremski Karlovci.
