THE CHURCH OF ASCENSION OF OUR LORD – Sremska Mitrovica

THE CHURCH OF ASCENSION OF OUR LORD – Sremska Mitrovica

Greek Catholic Parish in Sremska Mitrovica was established in 1886. After 1848, Ukrainians and Ruthenians from Hungary, actually the Western Ukraine, started settling in Sremska Mitrovica and the surrounding villages, so that their number reached 300 up to year 1885.

The first priest of the newly formed parish was Maksimilijan Relić – an ambusher from Relić village.

Bishop Ilija Hranilović obtained all the necessary requisites for services at his own expense, and got the license of a Roman Catholic priest from bishop Strossmauer in the chapel of St. Rok on the cemetery in Mitrovica.

The church started with the construction of the Ascension Temple on 24th September 1905.

It is a three nave church with the outer entrance hall, the main nave and two side naves, with the spacious soleil, and a shrine with high iconostasis of fine craft making. Inside the shrine there is a brown marble alter with artistically made canopy. The windows in the shrine and the soleil are figural, and in the naves they are geometrical.

The church has three alters: the main one in the shrine and the two side ones: shroud of Virgin Mary and alter of St. Antonije Pustinjak.

Interior architecture: the interior is original since the inside of the church is done in the rhythm (meter) of Schumann’s sonata.
