BUILDING OF PROPERTY SCHOOL – Sremska Mitrovica

Proprietary municipality of Petrovaradin was established in Sremska Mitrovica in 1873 in order to make the managing and exploitation of the state woods more rational. The main task of this municipality was to provide wood for construction and heating and other income from the woods to its members, that is to say, to cooperatives, families and administrative, educational and ecclesiastic institutions. As the time went by, Mitrovica became the centre of wood industry in this area.


By degrees, diverse factories and workshops for processing of wood were opened in the town. The building of the Proprietary municipality of Petrovaradin was built in neoclassical style in 1877. This is a two-storey building of a lavish decoration. It was created academically with the eclectic shapes inspired by renaissance buildings. The ground-floor was decorated with rustic square blocks, while the rich geometrical and floral decoration enhances the first floor. Symmetrical angular façade is distinguished by pyramidal cupolas with weather-vanes.


Nowadays, the Secretary of Internal Affairs is situated in the building of the former Petrovaradin municipality.
