MILITARY FRONTIER BRIGADE HEADQUARTERS- Sremska Mitrovica

The building was erected in the second half of the 18th century. At the beginning, it was used for the accommodation of the command officers of the 9th Frontier Regiment of Petrovaradin. Because of its basic purpose, it had all recognizable characteristics of the Military Frontier’s architecture – strictness, symmetry and reduced decoration. In 1881, Mitrovica was given the status of free urban community, and in 1886 it became the seat of the Supreme Court that had the jurisdiction over entire Srem and Eastern Slavonia. For the purposes of the newly established Court of Law, the base of the object was partially changed with the construction of the next floor and with the removal of the lobby in front of the main entrance around 1900. The building is marked by harmonious and serene proportions and strict symmetry. It was built in neoclassical style in combination with certain renaissance elements. The main fasade facing the west is marked by distinguished central risalit both on the ground-floor and the first floor, which is the most lavishly decorated part of the fasade. There is a tympanum above it. During the conservation and restoration works on the building in 2003, the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was discovered and reconstructed in the middle of the tympanum. Two standing sculptures of the ancient goddesses, Wisdom (Minerva) and Justice (Justicia), contribute to the particularly decorative character of the fasade. With the construction of the new court building at the beginning of the 1980’s, this edifice was given to the Museum of Srem.
