TRG SVETOG ÐORÐA – Sombor

The Square of Saint George represents the fount of the City Hall. The Square got its greatest esthetic value in 1940, when the bronze equestrian statue dedicated to King Aleksandar was placed there. The statue was the work of a sculptor Antun Augustincic. After the arrival of the Hungarians in 1941, the monument was removed from the Square, as well as, the orthodox cross from 1795. Nowadays, the cross is placed in the yard of the orthodox church of St. George. On the site of today’s shopping centre, there used to be a ground floor building known as In foro from 1804. There was also the first artesian well drilled in 1887 on the Square.
