CHURCH OF SAINT GEORGE THE MARTYR – Sombor

The church is situated  on the place where the Sombor’s Serbs since the Turks had a little St. Đorđe church which was restored in 1717. Nearby the old church, in 1744. they built the new big church tower. However, after it got  the status of free royal city, they brought the decision to build a church which will be worth acquired privileges. After the got the donations in 1759. there started the building of a new church  in baroque style, and it was painted by Teodor Kračun. During the restoration inside the church in 1886. the old iconostasis was taken off, and the new iconostasis in 1873. was painted by Pavle Simić. The Sombor’s captain duke Jovan Branković and the bishop of Bačka Jovan Jovanović were buried in the church. In the churchyard in 1759. was built the one floor cane house where in 1788. Avram Mrazović started „Norma“, the first course for educating the teachers of South Slovenians.
