“LAZA KOSTIĆ” SERBIAN READING ROOM – Sombor

“LAZA KOSTIĆ” SERBIAN READING ROOM – Sombor

The building was constructed in 1882 in the Eclectic style for the needs of the Serbian Reading Room, which was founded in 1845 on the initiative of 72 of the most educated and prominent Serbs.

The poet Laza Kostić, after marrying Julijana Palanački, became a member of the Serbian Reading Room in 1897, and in 1901 he was elected its president. He served as president until his death in 1910. As a sign of respect for its long-time president, the Serbian Reading Room remained without a president for the following year.

Alongside the library of the Serbian Teachers’ School, the Serbian Reading Room was the main Serbian library in the city until 1918, after which this role was taken over by the City Library.
