PLEBANIJA WITH SUNDIAL – Sombor

PLEBANIJA WITH SUNDIAL – Sombor

“Plebanija“ is situated next to the church of the Holy Trinity. For the purposes of the accommodation of the Franciscans, the construction of an abbey started in 1743. In the halls of this building, the authorities of Sombor received the “Charter of Privileges“ issued by Empress Maria Theresa, which proclaimed Sombor a free and royal town on April 24th 1749. By order of the Austrian Emperor Josef II, the Franciscans left the abbey in 1786. Sombor became the seat of great Backa-Bodros District in the same year. The abbey was turned into the headquarters of the district administration until the construction of a District Council. Nowadays, it is the seat of a parish.

There is a sundial on the southern façade of the building. It was made in 1852 on the initiative of the professor and headmaster of Teacher’s Faculty, Jovan Cokor. He had to leave Sombor for his bad temper and severe punishing of the students. Before he left, he had the sundial made along with a sarcastic inscription: “One of these will be your last one”.
