THE CHURCH OF SAINT JOHN PRECURSOR – Sombor
The church of St. John Precusor was build on the place where always were the places of worship. After the Turks came , the Christian church was turned into the mosque , and after they have gone, into the Orthodox church. Trying to hide of Turks, the monks of Fruška Gora’s monastery Jazak came and took the relics, and as the sign of thank the left the icon of Most honored Mother of God brought from Kosovo, which is in the church even today. The old church was pulled down in 1786., and new built in baroque style with elements of rococo was built in 1790. The iconostasis of the church was painted by Pavle Đurković. The church was restored in 1978.
