“KARLO BIJELICKI” CITY LIBRARY – Sombor

At the request of 129 signatories, among whom there were also 30 Serbs, the Hungarian Reading Room was founded in 1844. For its purposes, a building in the Classical style with elements of eclecticism was constructed in 1883. Today, the building houses the administration of the City Library and the Children’s Department.

The busts of prominent figures from Sombor—Laza Kostić, Veljko Petrović, and Herceg Janoš—are located in front of the building.

The City Library lending department building was constructed in 1877 in the Neo-Renaissance style for the needs of the first Sombor Savings Bank, founded in 1868. Karlo Bijelicki, the chief accountant of the first Sombor Savings Bank, laid the foundation of the City Library at the General Assembly of the association held in the City Hall.

The library preserves a true treasure on its shelves (over 300,000 items), including a Rare Book Collection of 309 volumes, among which the oldest is Zbornik by Božidar Vuković, printed in Venice in 1538. Also notable are the valuable collections of the Local History Department with over 4,000 volumes, as well as numerous newspapers and journals published in Sombor.

In 1994, the library became the central library of the West Bačka District. It consists of the Adult Department, Scientific Department with reading room, Reference Internet Center, Internet café with a press reading room, Children’s Department with reading room, bookbinding workshop, bookstore, and digital gallery.
