Početna / Experiences / NATIONAL MUSEUM – Kikinda
The Kikinda National Museum was founded on 7 November 1946 by the City of Kikinda. It is housed in the former Magistrate building of the Great Kikinda District, known as the Kurija, which was built in 1839. The Museum operates throughout the North Banat District.
The Museum’s collections include ethnology, archaeology, history, art and natural history. Since 2006, the Museum has displayed the original remains of one of the best-preserved mammoth skeletons in Europe, popularly known as Kika. The original remains form part of the permanent exhibition, while a life-size replica is displayed in the courtyard. An education department was also established at the Museum in 2006.
The permanent exhibition presents the lives of people in the territory of Kikinda and northern Banat, from the Neolithic period to the end of the Second World War.
In addition to the permanent exhibition and the mammoth remains, visitors can watch a film about Kikinda’s mammoth. The Museum’s ceremonial hall features an interactive presentation of the town entitled The Whole Town Is Here. Younger visitors can enjoy a specially designed space known as the Club, dedicated to exploration, fun and learning. The Museum’s gallery also regularly hosts thematic exhibitions.
The Museum also manages Suvača, a former horse-powered mill which is now designated a cultural monument of exceptional importance. Suvača is open to visitors from April to October.
Throughout the year, the Kikinda National Museum organises a wide range of programmes for different audiences, including Museum Night, Mammoth Fest, Suvača Day, and summer and winter educational camps.
Over the past decade, the Kikinda National Museum and Suvača have become important tourist and educational attractions in the city, particularly suitable for school trips and educational excursions for children.
