The “TERRA” International Symposium was established in 1982 in Kikinda. Held in the space of the old brickworks (built in 1905) and the majestic atelier of the former Plant 2, located within the “TOZA MARKOVIĆ” complex, the symposium has produced works that significantly influenced the development of contemporary Serbian sculpture.
Since its inception, 137 sculptors from Serbia and abroad have participated, including 85 internationally renowned artists from 26 countries. The symposium has created a unique collection of 137 monumental outdoor sculptures and 452 gallery sculptures, totaling 589 terracotta works. It has also hosted numerous thematic gatherings aimed at exploring developments in contemporary Yugoslav art and advancing theoretical understanding of terracotta sculpture.
“Terra’s magnificent workshop, housed in the old brickworks at Plant Two, a one-of-a-kind open-air gallery in the heart of the ‘TOZA MARKOVIĆ’ factory, is perhaps a uniquely almost fantastic interaction of sun, air, water, and silence, the intoxicating scent of the plains, and the specific breadth and kindness of the flatland soul.”
— Pero Zubac, The Art of Duration
“From the very beginning (1982), throughout the 1980s and 1990s, all gatherings of the TERRA International Sculpture Symposium in Kikinda clearly reflected the main characteristics of the art of that period… In all movements during the 1980s and 1990s, TERRA was clearly a promotional platform and agent of contemporary developments… Sculptors at TERRA were given a colossal opportunity for direct modeling, literally imprinting their own sensibility into clay. It was not just about poetic energy or confirming a plastic message. It seems that for a contemporary sculptor, the chance to leave one’s mark in raw material is of exceptional importance.”
— Sava Stepanov, art critic in addition to its own Center for Fine and Applied Arts, since 1986 TERRA has operated a gallery in the center of Kikinda. The gallery offers exhibition space that allows for displays beyond an intimate setting, giving visitors ample room to view and contemplate the works. Conceptually, the gallery supports both modern and postmodern approaches to art while remaining open to other forms of contemporary artistic practice.
