NATIONAL MUSEUM – Kikinda

The National Museum Kikinda was founded on November 7, 1946, by the City of Kikinda. It is located in the building of the former Magistrate of the Great Kikinda District, known as the Kurija, constructed in 1839. The museum operates within the territory of the North Banat District and houses ethnological, archaeological, historical, artistic, and natural history collections.

Since 2006, the museum has displayed the original remains of one of the best-preserved mammoth skeletons in Europe, popularly known as Kika. The original remains are part of the permanent exhibition, while a life-sized replica is exhibited in the museum courtyard. The museum also established an educational service in 2006.

The permanent exhibition presents the life of people in Kikinda and the North Banat region from the Neolithic period to the end of World War II. In addition to the permanent exhibition and the mammoth, visitors can watch a film about the Kikinda mammoth and explore an interactive city presentation in the museum’s ceremonial hall called “Here is the Whole Town.” Young visitors can enjoy a specially designed space known as the Club, for exploration, fun, and learning, while the museum gallery regularly hosts themed exhibitions.

The museum also manages the Suvača, a former horse-powered mill now recognized as a cultural monument of exceptional importance. Suvača is open to visitors from April to October.

Throughout the year, the museum organizes numerous programs for different audiences, including Museum Night, Mamutfest, Suvača Day, as well as summer and winter educational camps. Over the past decade, the museum and Suvača have become significant tourist and educational attractions, particularly suitable for school excursions.
