MILITARY FRONTIER COURT BUILDING – Sremska Mitrovica

MILITARY FRONTIER COURT BUILDING – Sremska Mitrovica

The representative edifice of the former Main Guard from the time of the Military Frontier is situated in the vicinity of the town park. Along with the building of the District Court, it represents the architectural whole from the time of the Military Frontier, when Mitrovica became the seat of the 9th Frontier Regiment of Petrovaradin. The town gradually became distinguished regimental headquarters attractive to the officers, merchants and craftsmen.

The edifice was built in the second half of the 18th century. The nearby town park was used as drill field. After the abolition of the Military Frontier in 1881, the building was redesigned for the purposes of a post office. The larger windows were made, the ceiling was raised and decorative elements were added, such as frontage, joints, garlands and cornices. These alterations did not change the basic concept of the Military Frontier’s architecture, which illustrates the spirit of that time by its fine construction and simplicity of the decoration.
