EČKA MANOR HOUSE – Ečka

In 1820, Lazar Agošton, a nobleman in Ečka, opened a new manor castle on the left bank of the Begej River. For the grand opening, every corner of the village was carefully decorated—houses were refurbished, courtyards and streets cleaned, tree-lined avenues shaped, and triumphal arches prepared. The head chef was brought especially from Vienna. Carriages and horses shone brilliantly in preparation for welcoming 300 distinguished guests from Vienna and Budapest. The ceremony was also attended by the famous Count Esterházy, the wealthiest and most prominent nobleman in Hungary.
On the evening of August 29, 1820, a ceremonial torchlight procession was held, and the following morning church bells announced the beginning of the festivities and invited the residents of Ečka to celebrate the consecration of the castle. After the formal lunch, a hunting event was organized for the gentlemen, while the ladies enjoyed gondola rides on the Great Lake and the Begej River. The highlight of the celebration was the Ečka ball, which seemed like pure magic—beautiful ladies’ gowns, magnificent uniforms, and colorful Bengal lights illuminating the many pathways throughout the park.
On the third day, the guests were delighted by the virtuoso performance of Franz Liszt, then known as a “child prodigy.”
For many years, the Castle was a gathering center for hunting enthusiasts from the country and abroad. Frequent guests included the Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand and the Serbian heir to the throne Aleksandar Karađorđević.
World War II and the devastation of war did not spare the Castle. The owners left permanently and moved to America.
Since the 1990s, it has been under the protection of the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments.
Today, this historic building has been fully renovated and transformed into a facility that offers guests an unforgettable stay in an authentic setting inspired by its aristocratic past.
The Castle features 38 rooms and 7 suites, blending modern and medieval design to provide guests with an intimate atmosphere, tranquility, and views of the magnificent park surrounding the estate.
