SUVAČA – Kikinda
Početna / Experiences / SUVAČA – Kikinda
The Suvača in Kikinda was built in 1899, when the old mill mechanism, purchased in Padej, was transferred to the newly constructed building. It has a circular base formed by 14 brick pillars, which support the dominant multifaceted pyramid-shaped roof over the drive mechanism space. The mill also has a rectangular section with a gabled roof, divided into the milling area and the miller’s room.
A side annex was added to the rectangular section, and along the northern wall there is a room with a porch, supported by two pillars. The mechanism in the circular room is powered by horses, while grinding takes place in the mill area, where the stones and sieves are located at the junction of the circular and rectangular bases. The Suvača in Kikinda is a rarely preserved example of this type of traditional technical structure.
Following the completion of the cross-border project “Mills that Grind, Roads that Connect” in 2020, the Suvača was adapted for tourist groups and serves as a gathering place for the local community, hosting a variety of events and educational programs. Behind the mill, a modern space was built for workshops and lectures.
