The primary activity of the Archive is defined by the Law on Cultural Goods (Official Gazette 71/94) and encompasses a series of procedures and actions related to the protection of cultural goods, i.e., archival materials. In addition to this primary activity, the Archive provides services for the use of archival materials to legal entities and individuals, issues various certificates based on the information contained in the materials it holds, publishes documents and historiographical texts, organizes exhibitions and lectures, and similar activities.
The Archive holds approximately 1,500 meters of archival materials, classified into over 350 collections and fonds. The chronological span of the materials ranges from 1774 to the present day. Four fonds contain 18th-century materials, 40 fonds contain 19th-century materials, and 213 fonds contain materials from the first half of the 20th century. Among the oldest and most valuable documents are two imperial charters from 1774. Several fonds include materials created through the administrative and governmental operations of the Veliko-Kikinda Privileged District (1774–1886). The district, besides Kikinda, also included the present-day towns of Srpski Krstur, Novi Kneževac, Mokrin, Bašaid, Novo Miloševo, Novi Bečej, Melence, Kumane, and Taraš.
Materials created up to 1918 are mostly in Hungarian and German, with fewer documents in Latin and Serbian, while materials created after 1918 are mostly in Serbian. The Archive’s library contains about 2,000 books, primarily on local and regional history, art, culture, and similar subjects. The Archive has also published over 20 books and publications on local historiography, covering the chronological span of its archival holdings, and providing a valuable contribution to the study and understanding of the history of northern Banat.
Notable recent titles include Kikinda – Centuries Pass, the City Remains by Biserka Ilijašev (a large and richly illustrated monograph on the urban development of the city) and History of the City of Kikinda until 1918 by Milivoje Rajkov.
