NATIONAL GARDEN – Pančevo

Each great culture enables us to realize the comprehension of the world of the former rulers, philosophers, visionaries and artists through the gardens, which represent the projection of the image of paradise. The Folk Garden, the biggest and the most beautiful park in Pancevo, was created in south-eastern part of the town by order of a brigadier Mihovil Mihajlovic in 1829. Actually, a small wood was transformed into park. The planners arranged this area according to the so-called German parks, which were, by definition, the synthesis of the elements of French and English parks: wide and straight lines in combination with winding alleys and romantic ambiences. The young bourgeoisie of that time insisted on great public parks outside the town centre and, thus, Pancevo was following the latest trends in fashion and keeping pace with the world. The Agricultural and Craft Exhibition of Pancevo, organized by the nearby districts in 1905, represented the most significant event in the history of the Garden. The documents say that approximately 100,000 people visited the Exhibition, which lasted for one month. It was the event of the utmost importance for the town.
