MONUMENT TO FILIP VIŠNJIĆ – Višnjićevo

MONUMENT TO FILIP VIŠNJIĆ – Višnjićevo

In Višnjićevo, on the village graveyard, by the efforts of the school youth in 1878., there was built the monument on the grave of Filip Višnjić. This great poet and player on the gusle (Balkan musical instrument), was born in 1765.. in Međaši in Bosnia. His songs, which are full of historic facts about the Serbian uprising and are full with beauty of forgotten language, remained familiar because of their writing by Vuk Stefanović Karadžić.

The monument is made of grey marble in the form of the pyramid about 1,80 m high and was made by R.Srešnjak in Vienna. On the monument is the picture of Filip Višnjić and engraved gusle and two notes- one with the facts about the grave place itself and the other with the versus about the fame of Filip Višnjić. The grave was surrounded by the metal fence. Between the two World Wars, the village Grk, where Filip Višnjić lived and died, got the name Višnjićevo. The monument was restored in 1952.
